Historic Sunday Night Football Match-Up to be The First-Ever Event with the Unique Roof Open

ATLANTA – September 10, 2017 – Mercedes-Benz Stadium officials announced tonight that next Sunday’s heavyweight tilt between the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons and visiting Green Bay Packers on NBC’s Sunday Night Football will be the first event played in the new stadium with its unique retractable roof open, weather conditions permitting.

It’s been 25 years since the Falcons have played an open-air game in Atlanta, finishing their run at Fulton County Stadium on Dec. 15, 1991 before moving into the Georgia Dome for the 1992 season. The final game in the Georgia Dome was Atlanta’s 44-21 victory over Green Bay in last January’s NFC Championship Game. The Georgia Dome is scheduled for implosion on Nov. 20, 2017.

Work to fully automate the roof will continue throughout the fall, but has progressed well allowing it to be open for next Sunday’s game.  Please see this video for a visual display of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof during an open-close sequence on August 29, 2017.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is home to the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, in addition to hosting many of the world’s top sports and entertainment events such as the 2018 College Football Playoff Championship game, the 2019 Super Bowl and the NCAA Men’s Final Four in 2020.
