Through presenting simplified illustrations of color in a realistic context, my work communicates with the audience on a primitive, yet, striking level. The surface of a plane, the edge, and interior, all create an important avenue for discovery and uncovering meaning and transformation. My work uses the space and volume of the canvas as chiseling tools to give an understanding of color in relation to the form they’re on. By exaggerating conventional light sources with paint, the installations offer real-life ‘filters’ similar to social media or Photoshop.
While my artwork typically draws inspiration from geometric patterns popular in street art, “Bird’s Eye View” is undeniably modeled after the inspirational architecture of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Each shaped canvas is one of a kind and hand built in my studio using traditional canvas building techniques. The overall design features unique polygonal forms coming together in an aperture formation, surrounding the octagonal canvas. However you interpret the central canvas will determine how you view the installation. Is it a top down view of the Stadium? A Falcon’s eye? A button? The only question now is what do you see -
